The Thunderchild Project
The goal of the Thunderchild Project was to co-create with our partner First Nation an effective educational model that better meets the learning needs of children attending school on reserve. HLS is integrating Project learnings into current and future projects to further develop effective approaches for Indigenous communities across Canada.
The Thunderchild Project Objectives
- Cultural orientation initiative – The cultural aspects of the First Nation community’s ways of learning and doing are understood by teachers and integrated in the school experience.
- Develop capacity to address complex social issues – Learning occurs more effectively as teachers and students develop greater capacity to address the complex social and mental health issues found within the on-reserve community.
- Indigenize the curriculum and instructional delivery – Richer and more fulsome teacher understanding of Thunderchild traditions and practices, ways of learning and knowing, increases their integration into daily teaching and enhances relevance of the student experience.
- Close and avoid learning and achievement gaps – Teachers tailor instruction to accelerate student achievement in foundational literacy and numeracy, and to maximize the cognitive development of each student.
The Exemplar Project concluded as scheduled at the end of August 2020.
